Issue #20:October 29, 2025
TLC performed development and real-world testing of its new rally car from September 16 to October 17, driving approximately 4,000 km in Baja Morocco 2025 and Morocco Rally 2025. The tests were conducted to align with the new Stock Category regulations that will come into effect from Dakar Rally 2026.
The new rally car is once again based on the Land Cruiser 300 GR SPORT, but with more flexible modification limits that allow for significant updates, especially to the suspension and brakes. During the tests, TLC driver Akira Miura from Toyota Auto Body and Ronald Basso took the wheel and shared their impressions ahead of Dakar Rally 2026.
Driver Comments
Ronald Basso:
“The new rally car builds on the Land Cruiser's strengths of durability and reliability, while tuning within the new regulations has further enhanced its performance. Recent Dakar Rally routes have been increasingly demanding, designed to match the capabilities of dedicated rally vehicles in other categories (T1, T3, T4). For us, that means the challenge gets tougher every year.
Until now, it's been a fight for survival as a production-based vehicle, but next year we expect rival manufacturers to join the rally. With this upgraded rally car, I expect some intense competition with our rivals on stage times. There's pressure, but I'm excited for the battle with this new machine.”
Akira Miura:
“The improved performance makes the new rally car noticeably faster, and I feel the potential of the Land Cruiser 300 GR SPORT has grown even more. On the other hand, higher speeds mean even small mistakes can result in major damage and ultimately impacting the outcome. During these tests, we focused not only on achieving development goals but also on working closely with the navigator to determine the optimal pace for managing the Dakar Rally with this car. We have gained a wealth of real-world experience, especially in the Baja Morocco and Morocco Rally events. We'll use these insights to help us make the best choices and refine our strategy as a team before the Dakar Rally 2026 starts.”
