First Half Complete: Maintaining a One-Two Position in the Production Car (Stock) Category
Cars and drivers refresh in Ha'il on Rest Day as they gear up for the second half

Issue #7:January 12, 2025

On January 10th, in the Saudi Arabian city of Ha’il, it was Rest Day for the 2025 Dakar Rally.

No competition was held on this day, allowing mechanics to replace and repair worn parts and conduct thorough inspections in preparation for the second half of the race. The final day of the first half was the second day of the marathon stage, where no mechanical assistance or parts supply was allowed. Despite this, the vehicles had no significant damage, and both cars arrived in succession at the bivouac around 7 PM, where the mechanics promptly began their work.

First-year Mechanic Sonda from Fukuoka Toyota Corporation, along with two French mechanics, were in charge of car #500, while second-year mechanic Tanigami was in charge of car #501 with two other French mechanics. The mechanics took their break during the night and resumed work again early in the morning on the 10th, bringing the vehicles back to near-new condition by around 8 pm.

Adding to the day’s significance, President Katsuhiro Matsuo of Toyota Auto Body, and Director Operating Officer Masaaki Ito, have come over from Japan to encourage the team staff at the bivouac. President Matsuo delivered a powerful message to the team: "Seeing this on the ground is different from seeing it on a screen. I'm very glad that I came. I am relieved to see everyone smiling and energetic in the face of such challenging conditions." Director Operating Officer Ito also inspired the team with his message: "Go strong. Secure the 12th consecutive victory with smiles!"

January 11th marks the first day of the second half of the race. A 605 km competition section heading southeast from Ha'il to Al Duwadimi is scheduled for the day.

President Katsuhiro Matsuo: We are grateful for the many fans supporting TLC. We hope to continue fighting in a way that honors their support.

Director Operating Officer Ito: The Land Cruisers we produce can go anywhere and safely return. Their ability to run so far in such extreme rally environments with only minor modifications is truly amazing.

Team Manager Kakutani: Both cars are in good condition for Rest Day, and it was great to be able to focus on maintenance. We expect challenging conditions in the second half, but we will come together as one and continue to do our best.

Chief Mechanic Philippe Challoy: We have increased the preventive maintenance tasks for Rest Day. Car #500 required slightly more work. The two Japanese mechanics did a great job.

Mechanic Tanigami: This is my second year, and my time with the team ends this year. I worked hard on Rest Day to leave no regrets. It was very enjoyable.

Mechanic Sonda: I know my way around the Dakar Rally maintenance site by Rest Day, so I was able to focus on my work without any mistakes today. I will continue to do my best.
